Accessibility Help and Style Settings

This website uses Accesskeys for ease of navigation for many types of users. The accesskey system is intended to provide keyboard shortcuts in that they provide an alternative form of navigation.

This addition allows users with limited physical capabilities to navigate the organisation’s website more easily. There are some things to note about this system:

  • functionality depends on the type of operating system you are using,
  • the attribute is only supported by MS Internet Explorer 4 and above and by Netscape 6x versions.

The usage of accesskeys vary from browser to browser. In Internet Explorer, the user must hold down the "Alt" key + the accesskey(0 | 3 | 4 etc) . Internet Explorer will then move to this area, specified by the accesskey. If this is a link, the user must press the return key to follow the link.

In most other graphics based browsers (Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla), the user must hold the "Alt" key + the accesskey(0 | 3 | 4 etc). If the accesskey is pointing to a link, it will automatically redirect to that page without any need to press return.

However if you are using Firefox version 2.0 or greater, you will need to hold the "Alt" key + the "Shift" key + the accesskey(0 | 3 | 4 etc). Firefox 2.0 will then automatically redirect to the that page.

The following is a summary of the accesskeys and what action they do when used

  • To navigate to this page use '0'
  • To navigate to the home page use '1'
  • To navigate to the site map use '3'
  • To navigate to the search page use '4'
  • To navigate to the contact us page use '9'
  • To return to the top of page use 'C'
  • On pages with forms you can use tabindex (press the TAB key) to get straight to the form. After navigating through the forms fields, the tabbing then starts at the beginning of the page as normal
