New section of DMW underway with Mountain Meitheal and Irish Ramblers Club

13 July 2009

New section of DMW, Cruagh Wood

Mountain Meitheal volunteers started constructing a new section of the Dublin Mountains Way linking Cruagh and Massy's woods on Saturday 11th July.  Funding for the materials has been provided by Irish Ramblers Club.  (Shay Walsh, Chair of Mountain Meitheal; Karen Woods, Recreation Manager of DMP and Milo Kane of Irish Ramblers Club sign Memorandum of Agreement for new section of Dublin Mountains Way).

This 370m section of trail will be constructed using a turnpike type of trail.  This involves a retaining wall of large Ballylusk stone, and the main treadway consists of a layer of geotextile, covered with a layer of 2" stone and then a layer of crushed stone/dust.  This trail type will raise the walking surface above the water table and provide a sustainable durable trail.

87m of the new trail were constructed last Saturday by the volunteers.  The next Mountain Meitheal (www.pathsavers.org) workday on this project is on Sunday 26th July - all are welcome to come and volunteer.
