Adopt-A-Trail
Volunteers play an important part in management and improvement of recreation in Dublin Mountains. The DMP has a range of volunteer programs, working with a number of organisations and individuals.
The Adopt-A-Trail programme is one way you can adopt your own trail and help give something back to the land! This is a cooperative effort between the Dublin Mountains Partnership and public landowners, primarily Coillte, over whose land the trails pass and Mountain Meitheal. A small group of two to three people can put in to apply for Adopt-A-Trail. No previous experience is required, only an interest and ability to maintain trails by cutting back overgrown brush, cleaning drainage structures, and checking and maintaining waymarking and signage. The aim is to keep your trail in the best possible condition for hiker use and trail longevity.
Adopter Responsibilities
Adopting a trail is a responsibility and a privilege, and it is important that the adopter take the responsibilities of maintaining the trail seriously. As the adopter of the trail, you will be responsible for the quality of the work performed, as well as for your safety.
- Sign and submit adopter agreement, which will be sent to you upon acceptance to the program (minimum two year commitment).
- Attend a one-day trail maintenance skills session
- Adopt-a-trail tasks include:
- Cleaning out existing drainage structures (waterbars, ditches)

- Cut back vegetation around waymarker posts and signage
- Check waymarker signage (ensure trail is well marked), replace broken or missing plaques
- Check and trail structures are safe and repair if necessary – stiles, bog bridges, gates
- Perform these necessary tasks a minimum of three times a year
- Submit a written work report to the DMP Recreation Manager after each work visit to your trail.
- Perform all work to protect the environment, natural resources, and the recreational experience of hikers.
