Free Guided Walks & Hikes May 2019

Monday 6th May 2019, Shankill to the Scalp

P e-booking required, reference for booking – Shankill to the Scalp

Description: join the DMP Volunteer Rangers on this free guided hike along the eastern section of the Dublin Mountains Way.  Starting from Brady’s Pub in Shankill the route takes in Carrickgollogan summit, the Scalp and the Lead Mine’s chimney before returning to Shankill.  This walk is public transport friendly, Shankill village is served by both Dublin Bus and DART services.

 

Date: Monday 6th  May 2019  at 10:00.

Duration: 3.5 hrs.

Distance: approximately 12km

Degree of difficulty: Moderate. 

Bring:  Good walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, hot drink, water & food (snacks).  

Meeting point:  Brady’s of Shankill Car-park at 09:45.

Please do not park in Brady’s car-park as this is for patrons of the pub only.

Saturday May 11th, Kilmashogue - Fairy Castle - Ticknock Loop 

Pre-booking required, reference for booking: Kilmashogue Loop

Description: A moderate looped walk from Kilmashogue car-park via the Wicklow Way (WW) to where it joins the Dublin Mountains Way (DMW), from there the route follows the DMW to Fairy Castle (537m).  Note this 1st 4.5km is a steady up-hill climb and requires a moderate level of fitness. From Fairy Castle the route continues on the DMW until the masts where it loops back downhill towards Kilmashogue where it re-joins the Wicklow Way. 

Date: Saturday 11th May at 11:00

Length: 9.5 Km (approximately)

Duration: 3.5 hrs

Meeting point: Kilmashogue car park at 10:45 sharp.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the 'Orienteering for Beginners' event will not take place this Sunday.

Saturday May 25th, Litter Pick in Ticknock on walking and mountain bike trails

Pre-booking required, reference for booking: Ticknock Litter Pick

Description: Come join the Dublin Mountains Partnership for a litter pick in conjunction with biking.ie along Ticknock’s Fairy Castle walking loop and Ticknock’s Mountain Bike Trails.

Date: Saturday 25th May at 10:00
Duration: 2 hours.
Distance: 4-5 km approximately
Degree of difficulty: moderate.
Bring: Walking boots, raingear, warm clothes. If you have gloves or litter pickers, please bring them but litter picking equipment will be available.

Sunday 26th May, Guided Walk of Slievethoul and Lugg Forests

 

Pre-booking required, reference for booking ‘Slievethoul & Lugg walk

 

Description:  A Dublin Mountains Partnership Volunteer Rangers guided walk of Coillte’s Slievethoul and Lugg Forests.  The Volunteer Rangers leading this gently paced walk will share their knowledge of the fascinating archaeology located in the woods including a Ring Barrow, a Cairn and a Megalithic tomb.  

Date: Sunday 26th May at 11:00

Meeting point: Slievethoul Forest entrance on McDonaghs Lane at 10:45

Sunday 2nd June, Barnaslingan & Carrickgollogan Loops Walk
 
Pre-booking required, reference for booking Barnaslingan & Carrickgollogan

Description: This free Volunteer Ranger led guided walk will take in the Scalp view-point, the Lead Mines Chimney and Carrickgollogan summit. It is a moderate walk on forest roads and trails, a small section of County road and a gravel track leading to Carrickgollogan summit. This is not a buggy friendly walk, it is suitable for children of 7 years and older.
Date: Sunday 2nd June at 11:00.
Duration: 2 hours.
Degree of difficulty: Moderate.
Bring: walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, water and a snack.
