Free Guided Walks July

 

DLR CoCo - SUMMER OF HERITAGE - EVENTS

As part of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s Summer of Heritage programme the DMP are hosting walks guided by DMP Volunteer Rangers every Sunday from July 8th to September 2nd.  The walks start at 11:00 from Barnaslingan car-park. Saturday July 7th, Kilmashogue - Fairy Castle -Two Rock - Ticknock Loop 

Reference for booking: Kilmashogue Loop

 

Description: A moderate looped walk from Kilmashogue car-park via the Wicklow Way (WW) to where it joins the Dublin Mountains Way (DMW), from there the route follows the DMW to Fairy Castle (537m).  Note this first 4.5km is a steady up-hill climb and requires a moderate level of fitness. From Fairy Castle the route takes in Two Rock before entering the forest at Ballyedmonduff where it re-joins the DMW.  At the Ticknock view-point the route leaves the DMW to travel down-hill on the tarred road until the junction with a gravel road which leads back to Kilmashogue, re-joining the Wicklow Way, and returning to the car-park.  On a clear day the views are spectacular.

Date: Saturday July 7th

Length: 12 Km (approximately)

Duration: 4 hrs

Meeting point: Kilmashogue car park at 10:00 sharp. Directions:

 

Traffic advice: A section of Edmondstown Road (R116) is closed between the Merry Ploughboy and Tibradden Rd (R113) until November 2018 for works, diversions are in place. 

 

Degree of difficulty: Moderate.

Description: This guided walk will take in the Scalp view-point, the Lead Mines Chimney and Carrickgollogan summit.  It is a moderate walk on forest roads and trails, a small section of County road and a gravel track leading to Carrickgollogan summit.  

Date: Sunday 8th  July at 11:00.

Duration: 2 hours.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate. 

Bring:  walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, water and a snack.

Meeting point:  Barnaslingan car-park at 11:00.

Friday 13th/ Saturday 14 July, Night Walk Tibradden to Fairy Castle/Ticknock and Talk on Exoplants

Description: An easy night walk from Tibradden Wood to Ticknock and Fairy Castle.  An invited guest will give a 30-minute audio visual presentation (weather permitting) outside the Ranger Hut in Ticknock on recent discoveries by the NASA Kepler Project of exoplanets (planets outside our solar system).  These discoveries were some of the most important in recent times.  Our guest has worked on the Kepler Project for 6 years and will discuss ‘goldilock planets’ – planets, like earth, capable of supporting life, the discovery of which has advanced our knowledge and understanding of space and earth.  While this walk is classified as easy, it will take place in darkness and is only recommended for those who are comfortable walking in the dark and over a relatively long distance.  There is also a bit of a climb involved – see below.

Date: Friday night/Saturday morning 13th/14th July.

Meeting point: Tibradden Wood car park at 21:45 on Friday 13th.  Walk commences at 22:00.  Directions

Traffic advice: A section of Edmondstown Road (R116) is closed between the Merry Ploughboy and Tibradden Rd (R113) until November 2018 for works, diversions are in place. Use the R115 from Ballyboden towards Killakee but turn left onto Mount Venue and then right onto R116.  

There is no public transport to Tibradden Wood.

Length: 12 km.

Climb: 450m

Degree of difficulty: Easy.

Duration: 5 hrs.

Bring: Good walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, a good torch (head-torch, if possible), whistle, hot drink, water, food, a camera and a packet breakfast.

Saturday July 21st, Dog Friendly Walk - Tibradden Forest

 
(Ref for booking – Dog Friendly Walk)

 
Description: A guided, dog friendly walk. Starting at Tibradden Car Park walking along the Dublin Mountains Way to Fairy Castle and return. Depending on the weather there will be the panoramic views over the city, to the Irish sea and south to the Wicklow Mountains. Dogs will be required to be on a lead in the car-park and where the trail travels across the open hill into sheep and Red Grouse territory and all the time if they do not readily respond to a call to heel. Please bring bags to pick up any doggy doo & bring back home for disposal.
Date: Saturday 21st July
Length: 8.5 km
Duration: 3 to 4 hours depending on the weather
