Free Guided Walks August 2018

DLR CoCo - SUMMER OF HERITAGE - EVENTS

As part of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s Summer of Heritage programme the DMP are hosting walks guided by DMP Volunteer Rangers every Sunday from July 8th to September 2nd.  The walks start at 11:00 from Barnaslingan car-park, except on Sunday August 19th when the start time is 12:00. Sunday 5th August, Barnaslingan & Carrickgollogan Walk,

DLR Summer of Heritage Event

(Ref for booking – Summer of Heritage August 5th)

Description: This guided walk will take in the Scalp view-point, the Lead Mines Chimney and Carrickgollogan summit.  It is a moderate walk on forest roads and trails, a small section of County road and a gravel track leading to Carrickgollogan summit. 

 

Date: Sunday 5th  August at 11:00.

Duration: 2 hours.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate. 

Bring:  walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, water and a snack.

Meeting point:  Barnaslingan car-park at 11:00.  Directions.

Bank Holiday Monday August 6th, Eastern DMW - Shankill - Carrickgollogan- Barnaslingan – Killegar and return 

Reference for booking: DMW Training Hike 1

Description: A moderate linear walk from Shankill to Killegar Road via Rathmichael Wood, Carrickgollogan, Barnaslingan and the grounds of the former Sports Hotel all along the Dublin Mountains Way.  This is an ideal training walk for anyone planning on doing the DMP Ranger led hike of the full DMW on Sunday September 9th.

 

Date: Bank Holiday Monday August 6th

Length: 17 km (approximately)

Elevation Gain: 513m

Degree of difficulty: Moderate. 

Duration: 4 -4.5 hrs

Meeting point:  Outside Brady's Pub Shankill at 11:00 sharp.

Please do not park in Brady’s car-park as this is for patrons of the pub only.

Sunday August 12th, Marley Park Rathfarnham to Sean Walsh Park Tallaght via the Wicklow Way and the Dublin Mountains Way

Reference for booking: DMW Training Hike 2

Description: A strenuous linear hike from Marley Park to Sean Walsh Park via Kilmashogue, Cruagh, Featherbeds, Cunard, Castlekelly, Bohernabreena, and Kiltipper Park following the Wicklow Way and the Dublin Mountains Way.  This is an ideal training walk for anyone planning on doing the DMP Ranger led hike of the full DMW on Sunday September 9th.

Date: Sunday 12th August at 10:00

Length: 30km

Elevation Gain: 600m approximately

Degree of difficulty: Strenuous 

Duration: 7-7.5  hours

Meeting Point: Marley Park’s main car-park off Grange Road at the Wicklow Way start point at 10:00.

Saturday 18th August, Dog Friendly Walk - Kilmashogue and Ticknock

Reference for booking – Dog friendly walk

Description: Bring your 4 legged friend along to enjoy a forest stroll. We'll start at Kilmashogue carpark, follow the Wicklow Way (WW) gently uphill for about 2.5 km, then we’ll say goodbye to the WW by keeping on the forest track, soon to turn off downhill, meandering through Ticknock Wood, passing the Little Dargle river along the way. We'll return to the same forest track by way of a short uphill walk along the tarmac road to Ticknock and then its flat and downhill back to Kilmashogue carpark.

Date: Saturday 18th August at 09:30.

Duration: 2 to 3 hours.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate. 

Bring:  walking boots/shoes, raingear, dog leash, dog poo bags, water and snacks for yourself and your furry friends.

Meeting point: Kilmashogue car-park at 09:30. Directions.

Sunday 19th August, Map Reading for Children - Cruagh

 (Ref for booking – Map Reading for Children)

Description: A fun and simple map reading themed walk on the Slí Na Slainte trail, suitable for children from age 7 upwards. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Date: Sunday 19th August.

Duration: 2 hours.

Degree of difficulty: Easy. 

Bring:  Wellies/ walking boots, raingear, picnic.

Meeting point:  Cruagh Car –park at 14:30, please note change of time.

Traffic advice: A section of Edmondstown Road (R116) is closed between the Merry Ploughboy and Tibradden Rd (R113) until November 2018 for works, diversions are in place.

Saturday August 25th, Marley Park Rathfarnham to Shankill via the Wicklow Way and the Dublin Mountains Way

Description: A strenuous linear hike from Marley Park to Shankill Park via Kilmashogue, Fairy Castle, Ticknock, The GAP, Glencullen, Killegar Lane, grounds of the former Sports Hotel, Barnaslingan, Carrickgollogan and Rathmichael Wood following the Wicklow Way and the Dublin Mountains Way.  This is an ideal training walk for anyone planning on doing the DMP Ranger led hike of the full DMW on Sunday September 9th.

Date: Saturday 25th August at 11:00

Length: 24.5km

Elevation Gain: 680m approximately

Degree of difficulty: Strenuous

Duration: 6-6.5  hours

Meeting Point: Marley Park’s main car-park off Grange Road at the Wicklow Way start point at 11:00.

Sunday 9th September, DMW Hike, Tallaght to Shankill.

Reference for booking: DMW Hike

 

Description: A strenuous linear hike along the full route of the Dublin Mountains Way from Sean Walsh Park in Tallaght to Shankill.  To sign up for this hike you will be required to complete one of the DMP Volunteer Ranger led training hikes on August 6th, 12th or 25th.  Places on the DMW hike are limited, if the hike is oversubscribed preference will be given to people who have completed more than one of the training hikes.  

Date: Sunday 9th September at 09:30

Length: 42.6km

Elevation Gain: 875m approximately

Degree of difficulty: Strenuous

Duration: 10-10.5  hours

Meeting Point: Sean Walsh Park, Tallaght at the Dublin Mountains Way trail head at 09:30
