Tuesday, 13 May, Dublin Mountains Makeover Lunchtime Walk in Cruagh Wood to Celebrate Dublin Climate Action Week

Join the DMP, Coillte, and South Dublin County Council to celebrate Dublin Climate Action Week on May 13th with a lunchtime walk at Cruagh Wood. Karen Woods from Coillte will lead an easy-paced hour-long walk and discuss the Dublin Mountains Makeover project. This initiative aims to transform over 900 hectares across nine Coillte forests from commercial use to recreational spaces, enhancing biodiversity and creating beautiful, diverse forests for future generations. A light lunch will be provided for attendees. To make the event more sustainable and accessible, a bus will run from The Square in Tallaght at 12:30PM (meet at 12:15PM at Rua Red Café and walk a short distance to the bus), returning from Cruagh at 2:30 PM. You may also use your own transport if you prefer.

       

Date: Tuesday, 13th of May.

Meeting point: Rua Red Café at The Square at 12:15PM or Cruagh Wood at 13:00PM.

Distance: 4km approximately.

Duration: 1-1.5 hours, approximately (2.5 hours including bus journey).

Degree of difficulty: Moderate due to incline and mountain access route boardwalk.

Bring: Sturdy footwear, rain jacket, warm layers and water.

Public Transport: free bus from Tallaght is available for this event.  Note, Local Link Kildare South Dublin Route SD4 bus operates to this location on Saturdays.

  

 No Dogs allowed on this hike.

           

Parking is limited at Cruagh Wood, please carpool where possible.

Wednesday, May 14th, 'Ticknock: What's Going On?' Guided Podcast Walk, a Dublin Climate Action Week event

Celebrate Dublin Climate Action Week with the 'Ticknock: What’s Going On?' Podcast Walk, created by artists Listen and Breathe. It was commissioned by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council under the Nature and Place Scheme and funded by Creative Ireland. DLR Nature and Place is supported by Coillte and Dublin Mountains Partnership. Follow the journey from the upper carpark at Ticknock Forest to Fairy Castle, guided by a host of local voices connected to the landscape. The podcast is timed to follow a moderate route at an easy pace. Core collaborators Hugh Farrell, Tyler Kieffer, and Kevin McNamara bring you this immersive experience through in-depth interviews


Participants will download the podcast to their own device in advance and the group will be guided by the DMP Volunteer Rangers. Download the poscast here https://ticknock.listenandbreathe.live/ or wherever you get your podcasts.

Please note that the route is steep at times so is not suitable for those with limited mobility.

Bring: Headphones, sturdy waterproof footwear, rain gear, warm layers, water, and snacks.

Meeting point: Go past Biking.ie to the Trailhead Signs at the Upper Barrier at Ticknock Carpark at 18:15.

Sunday, May 18th, Biodiversity Week Event with NPWS Knocksink: From Dusk to Dark

Even on the fringes of Dublin, biodiversity abounds in quiet corners, overgrown areas, and old industrial landscapes like the leadmines of Carrickgollogan. Join the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Dublin Mountains Partnership on a journey from dusk into darkness and hear the sounds of the dusk chorus, allow quiet time for ears and eyes to adjust, take in the sights and sounds of city and country alike, and search for signs of nocturnal wildlife.

 

Date: Sunday, 18th May at 21:00 

Length: 3 to 4km approx. 

Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours approx.  

Degree of difficulty: Moderate  

Bring: sturdy footwear, rain jacket, warm clothes, drink and snack, head torch.  

Meeting point: Carrickgollogan carpark at 20:45. Parking is limited so please carpool where possible.

                 

Note – no dogs, except guide dogs, allowed on this walk.
