Saturday 16th December Rock to the Top – Stop Shopping and Head for the Hills Hike

Description Inspired by the story of Oisín i dTír na n-Óg, who single-handed threw a boulder up the valley at Glenasmole, you are invited to join the challenge of recreating this mythic feat by working together to carry a granite boulder (in pieces) from Tallaght, to make a cairn at the foot of Kippure. The first third of the boulder is now on the mountain!  The second chunk will now be broken up for this midwinter walk.  Connecting city with mountains, and people with each other, the project is about walking and talking. Stories of the walks will be retold in sound and pictures at the end of the project, which will continue until all of the boulder has been brought to the top.

Friday 22nd/Saturday 23rd December  - Winter Solstice Night Walk

and  pre-Christmas Meteor Shower

Tibradden Wood – Fairy Castle –Ballyedmonduff – Tibradden

(Ref for booking – Winter Solstice Walk)

Description: Winter Solstice has been celebrated in Ireland for millennia, maybe since man arrived on this island about 10,500BC.  This evening/night-time walk will mark Solstice 2017 and will discuss its meaning.  This year, we have an added bonus: at Fairy Castle, we will witness a pre-Christmas solstice meteor shower (weather permitting) that's brief, but bright.

This moderate walk starts from Tibradden car park and goes via the Dublin Mountains Way (DMW) trail to the passage tomb on the summit of Tibradden. From there, we travel on to Ballyedmonduff where there is another prehistoric tomb to view (nice sheltered place for snacks).  We will discuss the solstice and some winter traditions and share some non-alcoholic wine (no alcohol allowed) and snacks.  The route then climbs back up to Fairy Castle at 537m where you will get (weather being kind) panoramic views over Dublin (bring your camera) and a pre-Christmas solstice meteor shower. We return to Tibradden car park from there.

Date: Friday/Saturday, 22nd /23rd December.

Climb: 465m

Length: 18 km.

Duration: 5 hrs.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate.  The walk will take place in the dark so you MUST bring a good torch, preferably a head torch.

Bring: Good walking boots, raingear, warm clothes, hot drink, water, food & torch.

Meeting point: Tibradden car park at 19:45 for 20:00 start. For directions see www.dublinmountains.ie/recreation_sites/tibradden_wood_pine_forest/
